If you asked me to list things I genuinely enjoy doing as an adult, it would definitely be a short list. But guess what? Grocery shopping is right at the top of it! 

There’s just something so satisfying about making a grocery list and checking off each item as you go. And let’s not forget the fun part – tossing in a few items you didn’t really intend to buy on your cart.

Of course, going to a great grocery makes that even better, because you always end up discovering so many new things to try. If you need store recos to stock up on essentials, I’ve got you. Here’s a list of the best supermarkets and online grocery stores in Hong Kong that I, my buddies, and of course, my mom, actually swear by. Happy shopping!

YATA has 10 branches all over the city – three are Japanese-style home department stores, while the rest are Japanese supermarkets. Today, we’ll talk about the one in the Hong Kong Commercial Centre.

Here, you’ll find fresh food sourced straight from Japan and other countries in the world. The fruit and vegetable sections are packed with unique options, so you can discover interesting treats that you won’t usually find at regular local supermarkets. 

And the best part? It’s a haven for vegans and vegetarians. You see, this supermarket has a dedicated section filled with plant-based products and tasty meat alternatives. 

Sure, some things might be a tad pricey, but we can’t help it. There’s just so much variety here, and we enjoy shopping here because of it. Japanese melons and peaches are always on our grocery shopping list when we come here!

Apart from that, YATA also offers a variety of Japanese brands and merchandise, including household products, electronic appliances, as well as fashion items and accessories.

This Central supermarket branch might be small,  but it’s great for grocery runs and casual shopping. We love this branch because it’s easily accessible and has an expansive range of offerings.  

Whether you’re looking for fresh food, meat, frozen goods, home essentials, or pet care products, you can find a variety of options here. Anyway, if you need more options, it’s best to shop online through their website or the PNS mobile app. 

There, you can browse through tons of items and brands. Plus, you can either collect your groceries at your chosen pickup store or have them delivered right at the front of your doorstep, with delivery fees starting at HK$ 50.

Great Food Hall is one of the sub-branches of PARKnSHOP. It’s a popular go-to spot for bougies and those who wish to enjoy gourmet treats every now and then. 

This grocery store slash food hall is accessible via the GREAT mobile application but it also has a small physical store in Pacific Place. However, it’s only for takeaways. 

You see, it has three gourmet zones, aptly named the Take-Away Zone, International Products Zone, and Fresh-Take-Home Zone.

In these zones, you can find more than 12,000 delicacies, goodies, and brands sourced from different parts of the world. We usually save this shopping spot for special occasions or when we want  to treat ourselves to something fancy. 

Make sure you check out their salad bar. It’s one of the best in town, trust me!

City’super is the ideal one-stop shopping destination for urban professionals who are always on the go. It’s more than just a well-stocked supermarket. It’s also a mega specialty store!

City’super offers shopping zones for Japanese groceries, Western groceries, Asian groceries, fresh and seasonal imported produce, plant-based products, gourmet treats, and so much more!

Another thing we like about City’super is that it has multiple branches across Causeway Bay, Tsim Sha Tsui, Sha Tin, and Central. That’s why no matter where you’re staying, you can quickly find a City’super branch near you.

One of our favorite Wellcome branches is this one in Causeway Bay because it stocks a great selection of fresh produce, daily necessities, organic products, pet supplies, and more. 

And yes, we’re talking live fish and seafood in big tanks and large batches of imported fruits and vegetables. 

This large supermarket also offers awesome clearance sales where you can get 15% off discounted deals and buy-one-get-one (BOGO) promotions. 

And guess what? It’s open 24 hours, all days of the week, so if you suddenly feel like snacking at the middle of the night, you know where to go. 

And there’s more!  Wellcome in Causeway Bay also has an onsite bakery and deli counter where you can grab a quick bite after you shop around.

We don’t really recommend this supermarket for regular grocery hauls because it features a limited variety of products. However, if you’re looking for fancy food or wine for special occasions, this is a good go-to spot. 

The highlights of this supermarket are handpicked Western and Asian products and produce including fresh fruits and vegetables, chilled and frozen seafood and meat, wines and spirits, personal care products, and more.

Another high-end supermarket you might want to check out is 3hreesixty. It’s not too different from usual grocery stores, but it’s more focused on offering healthy options. 

You see, 3hreesity showcases a “Wall of Wellness.” This wall is packed with an array of natural and organic food and products. 

That’s why we recommend this supermarket to those who have special dietary restrictions or health-conscious shoppers looking for organic alternatives. 

From vegan snacks, ready-to-eat meals, halal products, and gluten-free options, you’ll surely find a wide range of healthy alternatives here.  

Pro tip:

Skip the long queues at the main cashiers by heading to the self-scan payment zone. Some POS machines have a bilingual interface too, so don’t worry. Even tourists can check out groceries hassle-free!
