18 Affordable Eateries for Hungry Foodies in Hong Kong

We say this a lot and we’ll say it again – you don’t have to spend a lot to enjoy the local cuisine in Hong Kong. In fact, there are a lot of cheap options here that provide delicious meals to rival high-end restaurants. 

This is one of the many things our city has to offer and we’re glad to be here to point you in the right direction. In this article, we’ll show you how and where to enjoy the city’s culinary gems at an affordable price! 

1. Cheung Hing Kee Shanghai Pan-Fried Buns

We’re starting our list strong with Cheung Hing Kee. If you want to try the local street food with a promise for quality, this small restaurant earned a Michelin star in 2016. 

Their top recommended food item on their menu is the pan-fried buns. For the cheap price of 34 HKD for 4 pcs of their signature buns, it’s really worth the visit. If you’re in Hong Kong, don’t miss out on this one!

Pro tip:

  • Aside from their pan-fried buns, we’re also big fans of their fried pork chop noodles especially if you want a more filling meal. Visitors often miss this part of their menu, so don’t be afraid to try other stuff aside from their buns! 

2. Joy Hing Roasted Meat

Joy Hing Roasted Meat has been around for a long time. In fact, it lived to see the Qing Dynasty in the late 1800s. Who knows what secrets they’ve managed to hide in their kitchen since then?

Anyway, whatever it is, we hope they don’t stop doing it! They’re really great at creating Chinese-style barbecued meats, which is why you’ll see that a lot of people go for their barbecued pork rice or barbecued goose rice. 

Pro tip:

  • Joy Hing Roasted Meat tends to attract a lot of loyal locals and curious visitors. We find it best to eat here just before the rush hour (10 AM to 11 AM or 5 PM to 6 PM). You’ll (hopefully) be seated in no time!

3. Two Greens

Two Greens offer delicious meals that mix Malaysian and Cantonese dishes in their own unique concoction. The taste is reminiscent of authentic meals you can get from hawker centers with a different twist that only Two Greens can offer. 

A few of their must-try dishes are kaya toast and crispy meat patty with egg on rice, which you can get for HK $22 and HK $40 respectively.  

Pro tip:

  • Don’t miss out on their pepper soup dumplings. People tend to overlook it, but with the help of this guide, you won’t have to. Bookmark this page to be sure!

4. Kam Wah Cafe & Cake Shop

Kam Wah is a cafe that doubles as a bakery. If you’re not a fan of sweets and pastries, don’t be too fast to skip ahead! You might just find something you like here. 

Their most popular dishes are the egg tarts and pineapple buns (with porkchop!). However, they also have quite a number of choices on the savory side like buttered french toast and a variety of noodles. 

If you want to know how locals like their coffee and tea, Kam Wah will show you exactly how. 

Pro tip:

  • Don’t miss out on their hot milk tea! It’s really good and a great thing to pair with your meals or, better yet you can have it for dessert because why not?  

5. Master Low-Key Food Shop

If you want to try the famous Hong Kong-style egg waffles, you don’t really have to spend that much. Just head over to Master Low-Key Food Shop and they can whip you up a delicious one without you having to go over your budget. 

Their waffles also come in a variety of flavors – sweet, sour, spicy, savory – you name it, they got it!

Pro tip:

  • Expect long lines when you go to their store. Because they’re cheap and delicious, a lot of people tend to line up no matter what time it is. However, we can assure you that it’s worth the wait!

6. Both Street

The most revered food item from Both Street’s menu is the gua bao (stuffed buns in English).  

These come in traditional flavors as well as new, exciting ones they created in their own kitchen. If kimchi cheese fried chicken bao and pineapple spicy fried chicken bao sounds appealing to you, you’ve come to the right place. 

We’re firm believers of pineapple not belonging on pizza but on baos, they do!

Pro tip:

  • Do note that they only serve a limited amount of baos per day so it’s possible you might not even get one. Come as early as you can and you’ll be okay!

7. Tsim Chai Kee Noodle

Quite famous among locals, this small shop has a reputation for its noodles. Surprisingly, they only have three toppings available. 

That said, they don’t really need other gimmicks to attract potential customers. The broth itself will certainly leave you satisfied and plan your next trip back. 

Pro tip:

  • You have to try all three noodle dishes to get the most out of your experience – fish ball noodles, wonton noodles, and beef noodles. Share them with a friend if you can’t finish them all!

8. One Dim Sum

Experience authentic local dim sum for cheap at One Dim Sum! This is the one we recommend to curious visitors who would like to steer away from touristy spots that cater more to Westerners. 

A few examples of the dishes you can get here are steamed minced beef balls, steamed shrimp dumplings (our personal favorite!), and barbecued pork buns. 

Pro tip:

Since One Dim Sum is one of the best options for cheap dim sum in Hong Kong, expect to wait to be seated when you get there. 

9. Dim Sum Square

Another restaurant with dim sum for a cheap price is the Dim Sum Square. One of their most famous items off their menu is the har gao or the steamed shrimp dumpling.

If this sounds good, you should also try the creamy custard buns (it certainly wowed us), siu mai, and bbq pork buns. 

Pro tip:

  • Like most restaurants on this list, Dim Sum Square tends to attract a lot of hungry foodies during the peak hours (lunch and dinner time). With that in mind, we recommend going here an hour early if you want to avoid lining up at the back of the line a block away from the restaurant!

10. Mak’s Noodle

Mak’s Noodle is one of the top restaurants to go to if you want to try some authentic wonton noodles for an affordable price. They’ve been serving hungry customers since the 1920s. 

They also offer different toppings aside from wonton like beef, shrimp & pork dumpling, and more that we found just as good. Don’t be afraid to be more experimental with your orders while you’re at Mak’s Noodle because we have yet to try something from them we didn’t like! 

Pro tip:

  • Aside from their wonton noodles, we also recommend trying their beef brisket noodles, stirred noodles with dumpling, or the stirred noodles with spicy minced pork sauce. 

11. Australia Dairy Company

Even though it doesn’t sound like it, the Australian Dairy Company is a traditional Hong Kong restaurant that offers local breakfast staples like toast with omelet, milk tea, egg pudding, and such. 

Go here if you want something quick to help you fuel up for a full day of adventure. 

Pro tip:

  • When you’re here, make sure to order really fast. Call the waiter only when you’re sure about what to order. You are encouraged to also eat fast because of the number of people waiting in line. 

12. Kadorar Bakery

Kadorar Bakery is one of the local spots where you can get delightful Chinese-style baked goods like pineapple buns, puffs, and puddings.  

The bakery has a traditional and local feel to it, so we say go for this one if you’re curious about the local sweets. 

Pro tip:

  • We highly recommend ordering their French pudding buns that are HK $15 each. On most days, it sells out fast, so line up as early as you can if you want a piece (or two… or three!). 

13. Kuma Yummy

Causeway Bay has a lot of upscale restaurants, sure. However, that isn’t to say that there are no cheap (yet good) options around the neighborhood. It’s still Hong Kong, after all. 

If you find yourself in this side of the city, we recommend checking out Kuma Yummy, a shop that serves delicious Japanese food like one of their Happy Hongkonger approved hand rolls that are made to order. 

Pro tip:

  • They also serve fresh oysters from Iceland, Japan, Scotland, Korea, and more. Make sure to try it out, but not on an empty stomach of course! 

14. Kau Kee Restaurant

We like calling Kau Kee the queen of beef brisket noodles here at the Happy Hongkonger office. In fact, when we’re craving the dish, we automatically go to this restaurant. 

It’s not surprising Michelin has had them on the bib gourmand list for years now. On the menu aside from beef brisket noodles are the beef tendon in curry and noodles in broth or oyster sauce. A lot of people seem to enjoy their milk tea so make sure to try that one out as well. 

Pro tip:

  • We don’t think we’ve ever seen Kau Kee Restaurant empty. It’s always filled to the brim with people, which is why you should expect to line up or to be seated with strangers (or both!). 

15. Soup Day

Exactly as you would expect, Soup Day offers a variety of soup options like double boiled mixed fungus vegan soup and double boiled ginseng & chicken soup. 

However, soup isn’t the only thing worth trying while you’re here. 

In fact, you should also try getting your hands on their dim sum and congee. Moreover, you should check out their rice flavors as well. Most of them are quite interesting and flavorful like their steamed chicken with black fung pat rice. 

Pro tip:

  • Try this combination: authentic marinate brine chicken wings + slow cooked tomato with egg rice. Thank us later!

16. B + BC Cafe

B + BC Cafe is a great spot in Hong Kong for those who want to indulge in cheap Taiwanese cuisine. Every time we go here is another satisfying experience that’s certainly for the books.  

A lot of the dishes they serve here are Taiwanese staples like spicy pig stomach and marinated pork trotter. Great stuff!

Surprisingly, this cafe isn’t as popular as the others on the list. Hey, at least here you can avoid the lines! 

Pro tip:

  • They have tons of delicious options on their menu, so we understand how it can get overwhelming trying to decide on what to order. With that in mind, try going for our top three favorites: minced pork rice with soy egg, braised beef noodle soup with brisket, and tomato rice noodle soup with pork cutlet. 

17. Ding Dim 1968

Of course we wouldn’t end this list without another great dim sum spot. Try one of the famous local gems – Ding Dim 1968. 

We’ve been here a couple of times and there’s not a single thing we’ve tried that wasn’t worth a rating of 5 out of 5. With that in mind, you can never go wrong here whether you order the shrimp dumpling, quail egg siu mai, or the xiaolongbao. 

Pro tip:

  • If you’re ordering beer, it’s best to pair it with their deep-fried squid in chili garlic!

18. Tai Cheong Bakery

For traditional local sweets, Tai Cheong Bakery is one of our favorite places to go to. It’s a bakery well-known for its egg tarts and Chinese donuts – make sure not to leave without ordering seconds!

Pro tip:

  • Make sure to try any of their savory pastries too! They deserve as much recognition as the best sellers!
