In an interview with Tatler Asia, creator Jeanine Hsu mentions what she’s most passionate about – design and respecting nature. After looking at her works, we saw how her passions came together to create her jewellery brand, Niin.

Due to its eco-friendly values and unique style, it’s also easy to understand how Niin easily became one of the most popular local jewellery brands in Hong Kong. Even more so when you see that its prices are wallet-friendly too! 

Niin’s bracelets start at US$48, rings at US$88, earrings and cufflinks at US$98, necklaces at US$188, and clutches at US$788.

On the downside, many items in the online store are marked as sold out. While we understand that this is due to Niin’s affordability, popularity, and quality, we would appreciate it if they indicated if and when they will restock the items.

Identified as a contemporary and innovative art jewellery brand, Obellery was a brand set to be different from the get-go.

In 2014, designers Hugo Yeung and Belinda Chang co-founded this jewellery brand. But instead of conventional designs, the pair put out uniquely handcrafted “wearable objects” instead.

After seeing their designs, it became obvious to us that the art of craftsmanship is at the core of Obellery’s identity as a company. 

While some products are adorned with gems or stones, we like how the metal bases still carry the overall aesthetic. Moreover, their pieces display high-level and unique craftsmanship through skillful hammering, polishing, texturing, and twisting techniques.

The owners’ affinity and love for silversmithing go beyond their craft too. They invite local artists to exhibit their work in their gallery or put their jewellery up for sale in Obellery.

Moreover, we appreciate that Obellery offers something for non-artists too. They hold various workshops where beginners and intermediate crafters can learn silversmithing skills like annealing, filing, piercing, and soldering.

It’s no wonder how this brand became such a big name in Hong Kong’s contemporary jewellery brand scene. But it’s also because of all these good things that Obellery’s jewellery can be quite costly.

Their least expensive bracelet costs HK$750, the brooches at HK$1,200, the earrings at HK$480, and the rings at HK$1,100. While these might not cost much at first glance, these prices are reserved for some of their most basic designs.

So if you want to go for the most eye-catching and unique design, you have to be ready to pay a lot more.

Far from its humble beginning back in 2004, Qeelin is now regarded as one of Hong Kong’s luxury jewellery giants.

The brand began because founder Dennis Chan wanted to make jewellery inspired by traditional Chinese culture. While not a novel idea, what Chan wanted to capture was the balance between being inspired by the past and standing the test of time.

For us, the brand’s iconic Wulu collection is the testament of him succeeding at that.

Using colours and shapes inspired by the Chinese gourd, the products in this collection successfully call back to Chinese culture. But at the same time, the collection uses modern designs and timeless materials.

Another thing we like about Qeelin is its varied range of products. While other brands offer bracelets, Qeelin offers bangles, bracelets, and accompanying accessories like buckles.

Aside from this, Qeelin also offers selections for various target audiences like babies or for events like graduations. We also appreciate that they have a less traditional selection too, as proved by their couture pieces.

But in our opinion, the biggest advantage Qeelin has over its peers is its material variation. As usually seen in large jewellery brands, Qeelin carries products of various finishes (white gold, rose gold, etc.), karats, and stones.

At the same time, Qeelin being a huge jewellery brand has its cons. Adding brand value on top of an already expensive category of product is a recipe for something your bank account won’t appreciate much.

Born into a family of jewellers, Sarah Zhuang inherited the creative reins of her family’s jewellery business in 2013. After four years, she let go of this opportunity.

That was when Sarah Zhuang Jewellery was born, a brand where her designs can breathe without having to conform to the family business’ image. Through her new brand, Sarah designs elegant, practical, and unique jewellery made with modern women in mind.

And so we don’t think a different slogan could describe this brand better than the one they chose: as versatile as women. 

Sarah Zhuang Jewellery reflects this slogan by producing jewellery that is the perfect balance of elegance and functionality. Sealed in 18 karat gold and embellished with precious gemstones, their pieces are made to be worn in multiple ways.

So in our opinion, versatility is Sarah Zhuang Jewellery’s strongest suit. The jewellery pieces of this brand are perfect for combinations and layering, something not all of the competitors can offer.

A perfect example of this would be the Butterfly Rose Tourbillon Watch. We were delighted to discover that it can be worn in seven different ways because its detachable parts can be turned into a brooch, pendant, or ring.

But another thing to point out about this watch is that it’s one of the few pieces offered as standalone jewellery. We think it’s a weak point that most products are offered as parts of a collection, which makes for fewer choices and variety for customers.

Founded by British designer Tayma Page, Tayma Fine Jewellery has been a part of Hong Kong’s jewellery industry for more than 30 years. Its secret? Gemstones.

Page is famous for having an eye for gemstones. Naturally, the brand she founded was built on this talent as well.

And so out of all the jewellery brands in Hong Kong featured in this list, Tayma Fine Jewellery owns the most colourful and exotic range of gemstones. Be it the brand’s bespoke pieces, collections, or standalone jewellery, a gemstone would be its main point of interest.

But what we appreciate the most about Tayma Fine Jewellery is how they want customers to find a piece they can call their own. If you visit their store at Central, they will be working with you to find a gemstone that suits your personality best.

If you’re not a fan of that level of personalisation, you can opt for their ready-made collection and standalone pieces as well. Just choose if you want aquamarine, opal, Paraiba, pearl, tourmaline or something else.

But all this talk of gemstones made us realise one thing: this brand is not for everyone’s liking. We know that not everyone is looking to purchase pieces brandished with show-stopping gemstones.

Another glaring disadvantage is how these pieces will cost you more than any other brand featured on this list. With some pieces going up to 6-digit prices, we understand if you’d rather look for a more simple gemstone piece elsewhere.

Next on our list is a jewellery brand that caught our eye for multiple reasons: Yuan.

At first glance, Yuan is obviously exceptional, with their catalogue boasting a selection of jewellery pieces that range from elegant and modern to stylish yet timeless. They carry a wide range of jewelleries as well, including necklaces, earrings, bangles and bracelets, and rings.

The base of these pieces are diverse from what we’ve seen, allowing you to choose from various gold finishes, such as white gold and yellow gold. There’s also sterling silver if you’re looking for something more affordable.

Moreover, what we love most about Yuan jewellery is that it provides customers with a unique DIY jewellery experience.
