Meet the quiet neighborhood of Pok Fu Lam! Nestled on the western coast of Hong Kong Island, this residential area offers a tranquil escape from the bustling city center. Usually far away from the eyes of visitors, this neighborhood has a lot of hidden gems only a few get to discover.

1. Shoot some arrows at the Hong Kong Island Archery Club

To those who would like to bring out their inner Katniss Everdeen, you can head over to the Hong Kong Island Archery Club and practice shooting at ranges.
You can easily improve the accuracy while you loose your arrows at fixed targets. You can choose from 18m to 70m distances depending on which you’re comfortable with.
Pro tip:
Here are things you need to remember before going to the Hong Kong Island Archery Club:
- There’s ample parking space available
- Bring a mosquito repellant since there are a lot of mosquitos in the area
- Make sure to stop by a restroom beforehand because there are no restrooms available here
- Note that most of the organizers at the club speak only Chinese. However, it’s easy to get by with using sign language and an online translator.
2. Appreciate local history at Grass Silo of Dairy Farm

There are a lot of chances to go on a hike while you’re in the Pok Fu Lam neighborhood. If you do take up the opportunity, it’s most likely you’ll come across a historical landmark like the Grass Silo of Dairy Farm.
This historical structure was built in 1886 by Dairy Farm with the goal of producing fresh milk. It’s currently abandoned. With the trees, shrubs, and vines surrounding it, you can see that the building has already been claimed by nature, which makes for a much more interesting site.
Pro tip:
Make sure to get your camera ready when you plan your visit here because you’d want to take photos of the Grass Silo!
3. Explore an abandoned site at Block A, Old Dairy Farm Staff Quarters

Like we said, there are quite a few historical landmarks in the Pok Fu Lam neighborhood. Another one to add to the list is the Black A, Old Dairy Farm Staff Quarters.
Having been erected in 1887, it’s considered one of the oldest Dairy Farm buildings in Hong Kong. This two-storey structure used to be where the farm manager lived. Now, it lies abandoned and like the Grass Silo, reclaimed by nature.
Pro tip:
We recommend visiting this during the day as it gets a bit creepy at night! Although, it might just be us. We’re quite scaredy cats here at Happy Hongkonger!
4. Take photos of historical ruins at Old Milk Company Dormitory

Another historical landmark in Pok Fu Lam is the Old Milk Company Dormitory.
This is another one of the ruins left by the Dairy Milk company from the 1880s. It’s a building with British and Greek architecture influences, which we find interesting in an otherwise greenery landscape.
Pro tip:
The Grass Silo, the Block A, and the Old Milk Company Dormitory are all just beside each other. If one caught your attention, it’s best to visit all of them to get the most out of your visit!
5. Take a breather at Sassoon Road Sitting-out Area

The Sassoon Road Sitting-out Area is one of the city’s hidden gems, especially if you’re on the lookout for a serene space to escape the cacophony of city sounds.
The benches in the area are guaranteed to be the best seat to enjoy the East Lamma Channel along with a few buildings and mountains nearby.
Not a lot of people know about this spot, especially visitors, so most of the time, you can even have the space all to yourself!
Pro tip:
There’s ample space to walk or jog around, so wear comfy shoes if this is something that interests you!
6. Take a look at a European-style building The BNP Paribas Museum of Bethanie

The BNP Paribas Museum of Bethanie is currently being operated by the Academy’s School of Film and Television. However, it’s been around since 1875 and was first used as a sanatorium.
It now houses numerous historical items from Bethanie and the activities of French missionaries dating back as early as 300 years ago.
Aside from the current educational facilities in the building, there are also two performance venues, a chapel, and an exhibition hall.
It’s a beautiful European-style building, which is why it’s impossible to miss while you’re in the neighborhood. To paint you a picture of how beautiful this structure is, there are often weddings being held here!
Pro tip:
We find that the perfect time to take photos of the building is during golden hour. It’s a great way to capture a nostalgic vibe of the European-style building.
7. Have a delicious cup of coffee at Cupping Room

For a great quality cup of coffee just around the neighborhood, we recommend the Cupping Room.
They serve delicious classics like macchiato, flat white, and affogato. However, if you’re on the adventurous side, we suggest trying out their specialty drinks like coconut matcha latte and New Orleans style.
They also have several other stores in other parts of Hong Kong like Sheung Wan, Central, Harbour City, and more.
Pro tip:
Aside from delicious drinks, we also recommend their food items. As breakfast food lovers, our favorite is the full brekky, especially if we need something heavy to fuel us up until the afternoon.
8. Try Chinese cuisine staples at Sun Wah

Sun Wah offers delicious Chinese cuisine staples and classics. There are a lot of Pok Fu Lam residents who frequent this place, which is a telltale sign if a restaurant is good.
We also find that there’s a homey feel to it because it’s reminiscent of traditional dim sum restaurants that you won’t see a lot in Hong Kong.
Pro tip:
You have to try the dim sum while you’re there. It’s delicious and cheap – what more can you ask for?
9. Slurp on some Vietnamese noodles at Blue Pho

Blue Pho is one of Pok Fu Lam’s best kept secrets. While this means shorter waiting time than most famous restaurants in Hong Kong, it’s also unfortunate how this place stays low on everyone’s radar.
However, we’re here to change that! Anyway, they serve hearty Vietnamese food. You can order a set so that there’s also a drink and a side dish included with your main dish.
An example of dishes they serve are garlic butter chicken wing, Thai fish cake phó, and cold vermicelli with spring roll.
Pro tip:
We’ve been able to enjoy a lot of dishes from Blue Pho over the years. However, their spring rolls will always have a special place in our hearts which is why we highly recommend this to everyone.
10. Enjoy the variety at Grove

We love the Grove for their extensive menu. They have pasta, salads, roasted options, snacks, cold cuts, desserts – you name it!
They have several stores all over Hong Kong. However, the one at Pok Fu Lam is quite small so we find it best to order here for take out.
That said, if you’re able to snag one of the two seats they have available, then by all means, enjoy the dining experience!
Pro tip:
Our top recommended food items from Grove are pork chop with lemongrass with steamed rice and siam red curry chicken with rice (if you’re a fan of spicy food!).
11. Bite on a slice of pepperoni at Pizza Express

Pizza Express is one of the most famous restaurants to get pizza in the city.
They have a classic menu filled with delicious goodies you can never go wrong with like margherita, kale & mushroom truffle, and Sicilian sausage and spinach.
Additionally, they also have ample vegetarian options and a must-try breakfast menu.
Pro tip:
For us at the Happy Hongkonger, the best pizza from Pizza Express is the lava. It has a tomato base filled with burrata mozzarella, olive, cherry tomato, fresh basil, parmesan, and rosemary.

Kam Kee Cafe is a Hong Kong-style cafe that offers local meals, drinks, and desserts.
It’s quite famous among locals and tourists, which is why they also expanded to other countries like Malaysia and Singapore.
A few examples of the food they serve are golden French toast with ice cream, signature pig’s liver with macaroni, and chicken slices with mixian in hot & spicy soup.
Pro tips:
- If you’re stumped by the number of items on their menu and feel overwhelmed to choose, we highly recommend the baked tomato pork chop with rice.
- Also try their almond tea with egg white if you want to spice things up!

If you’re looking for cheap Chinese food in Pok Fu Lam, Fairwood is a great option. It’s a fast food restaurant that serves a lot of exceptional dishes considering the price they come with.
The top local favorites are ah wood pan-fried eggs with crispy sausage, pan-fried turnip cake with congee, and pork cutlet with ah wood pan-fried eggs and french toast.
Another thing we love about Fairwood is how there are almost always seats available because unlike most local restaurants, their space is quite huge.

They also have a lot of delicious and healthy options on their menu. Just take a look at the tasty & green part of their menu!

TamJai SamGor is a Chinese noodle restaurant which not a lot of foodies know about – yes, even the locals! You know what that means…more for us!
Kidding aside, we believe this place deserves some hype which is why we’re recommending it to Happy Hongkonger readers who are foodies like us!
They offer a lot of interesting items on their menu such as herb chicken wings, sliced pork belly with mashed garlic, and pork tongue.
Pro tip:
Their mixian noodles absolutely take center stage everytime we dine here. We highly recommend their cross-bridge mixian. For an affordable price of HK $56, you’ll get various toppings on your noodles like fishball, pork, beef, tofu puffs, chives, bamboo fungus, and many more!
