How to Make the Most of Your Trip to Tai Long Wan, Hong Kong

Even when you think you already know Hong Kong, you often find more things to explore. This is what it was like for us when we discovered Tai Long Wan.

It’s a 3-km bay that attracts a lot of hikers, campers, and other outdoor adventurers. It’s surely enough to quench your adventurous heart.

If you’re raring to have a go at it yourself, buckle up, outdoor explorer! You’re in for a treat because in this article we’ll show you how to make the most of your trip to Tai Long Wan.

Best time to go to Tai Long Wan

The best time to go to Tai Long Wan is during Hong Kong’s sweltering summer days, which are from mid-July to mid-September. Make sure to bring sunscreen and a mosquito repellant though!

However, if you’re here to enjoy other sights and attractions in Hong Kong, we suggest visiting during March, April, October, or November. This is when the temperatures are cooler, which makes going around a bit more comfortable.

How to get to Tai Long Wan

First things first, how does one get to Tai Long Wan?

Well, the top recommended option (and the most adventurous one!) is hiking. Let the trip commence with a good workout!

With that in mind, make the Cha Man Street in Sai Kung Town Centre your starting point. Ride the village bus NR29 until you get to the Sai Wan Pavilion.

You’ll find the start of the trail across the pavilion. There are also signs around so it shouldn’t be that hard to spot.

Now, this is where the hike starts! You don’t need to be a seasoned hiker to get through this trail, by the way.

The most challenging part of the hike is when you climb up several steps, so it shouldn’t be that tiresome. It’s rewarding though, because the trip to get to Tai Long Wan is a 45-minute scenic adventure.

Plus, you’ll eventually find yourself at Sai Wan Beach, one of the four beaches in Tai Long Wan.

To get the best view, we suggest continuing the hike to the next beach. This is where you’ll get the chance to see more of what Tai Long Wan has to offer! Again, this hike would take another 45 minutes.

Things to do in Tai Long Wan Hong Kong

Bring your fur baby to the beach

So, we just said that at Tai Long Wan, you can find four fantastic beaches. These are Sai Wan Beach, Ham Tin Beach, Tai Wan Beach, and Tung Wan Beach.

What makes them even more fantastic is that they all allow dogs. If you’re a Hong Kong local, you know that this is quite uncommon in our city!

That’s why if you own a dog, they don’t have to stay in your apartment the entire day. In fact, you can bring them along with you on this adventure.

It’s most likely you’ll meet several dog owners while you’re here, so don’t be afraid to say hi! It’s probably best to keep your dog on a leash to be safe, though, at least if your pet is on the reactive side.

Muster up the courage for cliff diving

There’s a hidden gem in Tai Long Wan called the Sheung Luk Stream. It’s situated between Sai Wan and Ham Tin beaches, which is why it’s often overlooked.

However, while you’re already here, we think this is something you shouldn’t miss – especially if you want to take the opportunity to see the waterfalls, enjoy the natural pools, and of course go cliff diving.

To get to Sheung Luk Stream, look for the restaurants in Sai Wan. At the end, there’ll be a path on your left. Walk straight to it until you see the waterfall.

Stay overnight by camping

Who says going to Tai Long Wan is just a one-day adventure? You can surely stay here to go camping and watch the stars. And there’s even no need to bring your own gear because you can easily rent everything you need at the stores nearby for just HK $200.

You can stay at any of Tai Long Wan’s four beaches. However, a lot of people will tell you to just stay at Ham Tim if you want to be near the restaurants and public facilities.

Ride the killer waves

One of the best beaches to surf in Hong Kong is Tai Long Wan. While you’re here, you have 4 beaches to choose from.

If you’re a beginner to the sport, we would suggest the Sai Wan beach. After all, the waves here are usually more gentle.

By the way, there’s no need to bring your own equipment while you’re here because you can rent one in Ham Tin!

Where to Eat at Tai Long Wan

Oriental Restaurant and Bar

Address: Sai Kung, Hong Kong

Pricing: $

Directions

The Oriental Restaurant and Bar is one of only two restaurants in the area. They have an open deck that promises gorgeous views by the sea side. As far as food goes, we think their silken tofu is the best dish on the menu, so make sure to try that one!

Hoi Shan Restaurant

Address: Hong Kong, Sai Kung, 西貢西灣村A – 5號

Pricing: $$

Directions

The best things to try at the Hoi Shan Restaurant are the seafood and meat options. We also love their milk tea. Order it iced and relax with the beautiful views of the sea side.

This is a cheaper option than Oriental Restaurant and Bar. That said, they’re both affordable options!
