Pros

  • Work accepted 5 days a week
  • Works with multiple charity organizations
  • Established in 2011

Cons

  • Work is fairly limited

Feeding Hong Kong is an organization that functions mainly as a logistics hub.

The organization’s work revolves around collecting excess food and donating it instead to food banks, clubs, kitchens, shelters, and other charities. As such, it is unexpected that most of the volunteering opportunities they offer focus on transporting food.

One of the things we like about Feeding Hong Kong is that they offer work five days a week for volunteers. Most of this work is what they call “bread run,” where volunteers go to partner bakeries and retrieve surplus pastries to be donated the next day to other organizations.

You can also take up other tasks, such as sorting and packaging food in the warehouse, delivering the food, helping out in the office, or raising awareness by being a community champion.

We also like how the organization has shown their achievements since their establishment. Since 2011, Feeding Hong Kong has partnered with over 400 food companies and donated over 16 million meals to over a hundred charities in Hong Kong.

This data means that although your work opportunities are limited to food collection, sorting, and transportation, we believe your work with Feeding Hong Kong does more than meets the eye.

Pros

  • Wide range of opportunities
  • Frequent and numerous projects and programs
  • Large network of volunteers and organizations

Cons

HandsOn is a relatively new volunteer organization established in 2007. Throughout the years, the organization has already empowered thousands of volunteers in Hong Kong to help in myriad ways.

One of the greatest advantages of working with HandsOn Hong Kong is they offer a wide range of opportunities that are not confined to a single field. Through them, you can be a sports class assistant, a teacher, a food distributor, and more.

This variety of options ensures that people with different abilities will put their skills to good use. In addition, these events will also allow you to develop your abilities in areas you’re interested in.

Every month, HandsOn creates up to 200 different events volunteers can work in. Some of these opportunities also come from collaborating with other charitable institutions. Their causes cover youth empowerment, environment, food assistance, and more.

All of these combined allow HandsOn to offer one of the most diverse and exciting volunteer work prospects in Hong Kong.

The amount of work that HandsOn does is made possible by thousands of volunteers. According to the organization, over 7,000 individuals volunteered in over 16,000 activities that helped 80,000 individuals in 2021 alone.

As such, we believe that HandsOn Hong Kong is a great organization to volunteer for if you want to develop your skills and explore your interests while helping thousands in the process.

Pros

  • Established in 2002
  • Numerous book-related programs

Cons

  • Relatively limited opportunities

Bring Me A Book Hong Kong is an organization established in 2002. It is the local arm of an international organization of the same name.

As the name suggests, Bring Me A Book’s main programs revolve around increasing literacy and interest in reading through various programs.

The institution’s projects include building bookcases in schools and communities with age-appropriate material, author meet-and-greets, and the creation of lending libraries.

In addition, Bring Me A Book conducts training for parents and grandparents to better read and tell stories to their children.

Although these programs may be limited in scope, we believe that you may still find the organization appealing to volunteer for. This is because the organization offers different opportunities to put your skills to work.

As a volunteer, you can help wrap books, do office and administrative work, and read children’s stories in schools and communities. There are also skills-based opportunities for volunteers in Hong Kong, which include offering HR and legal advice.

You can also choose to volunteer for long-term projects, wherein you can join event sub-committees such as fundraising, marketing, and more.

All in all, we believe that Bring Me A Book Hong Kong is a good place for those who enjoy teaching and working with parents and their children.

Pros

  • Numerous opportunities
  • Ability to assist different people in different fields
  • Established in 1878

Cons

  • Program calendar not shown

Po Leung Kuk is one of the largest and oldest non-profit organizations, established in 1878.

Initially, it was established to protect and support human trafficking and abuse victims. Now, it offers a wide range of programs and, as a result, different opportunities for volunteers in Hong Kong.

This variety is what we like most about Po Leung Kuk. Their services include child and elderly care and other cultural, medical, and educational programs.

They perform these functions through the schools, a museum, and other facilities they built up through the years.

Volunteers would do tasks such as facilitating recreational activities and workshops, escorting people to medical appointments, taking care of kids and helping them with homework, and more.

With such a wide range of services, Po Leung Kuk most likely has something for you to do and improve your skills.

We also like how the organization directly helps people so you can see the effects of your work immediately.

Together with other volunteers and workers, you can help Po Leung Kuk provide help and support to over 800,000 people annually. Overall, it is a great organization to volunteer for, especially if you enjoy volunteer work that involves interacting with numerous people.

However, we do wish that Po Leung Kuk shared their program and event calendar so potential volunteers can see direct examples of what they can do and when they can help.

Pros

  • Services help develop legal skills
  • Provides opportunities for people interested in laws

Cons

  • Volunteer work is limited
  • Volunteer work lasts for a long time

Justice Centre Hong Kong is a non-profit charitable organization established in 2007. Most of the organization’s work revolves around asylum seekers and refugees.

Justice Centre’s services include providing legal aid and assistance to victims of human trafficking and abuse and providing refugees access to their basic needs.

We like how the organization provides yearly updates on how it performed. In 2021 alone, they helped 200 people and gave dozens of people a chance at a better life in Hong Kong.

As you may expect, most of the volunteer work available in the Justice Centre involves legal knowledge. Although limited, we believe the organization is an exceptional choice to volunteer, especially if you are interested in international and refugee law.

The organization helps interested volunteers in Hong Kong see and experience the intricacies of aiding refugees since the volunteers would primarily do casework and legal research.

Volunteers can also handle communications and media, which involves managing social media and other relations between the organization and other partners.

We like how these functions would help propel the volunteers’ careers in their fields of interest through training and hands-on experience.

However, most of these workers are full-time, with part-time schedules up for negotiation. You may need to devote at least six months to the Justice Centre.

Nevertheless, if you find legal work fulfilling, wish to improve your legal knowledge, and help victims of abuse, volunteering for the Justice Centre may be a good option.

Cons

Asian Charity Services Limited is one of the leading charity organizations that supports the leaders of small-to-medium sized NGOs to better help their beneficiaries and service users.

We all know that these NGOs have limited access to professional training and resources for their organizations to grow, Asian Charity Services Limited is there to alleviate their problems and complex societal challenges.

By providing pro bono capacity-building services, they are able to help small-to-medium sized NGOs in Hong Kong by connecting them with like-minded businesses and social-minded organizations which can provide the needed advice, funding, and resources.

They have a total of four signature training programs that leave a lasting impression on NGO participants. This includes their ENGAGE Digital Exploration wherein they explore topics in video storytelling and digital campaigning.

We were astonished by their ASCEND strategic workshop wherein they cover topics involving strategic planning, fundraising strategies, and board governance.

These three topics are essential for NGO leaders to have thus it is targeted at the C-suite of NGO leadership, executive management, and their Board members.

Pros

  • Years of experience
  • Works with multiple charity organizations
  • Frequent and numerous projects and programs

Cons

  • Volunteer work is a bit limited

Soap Cycling started off as a company that helps students learn how to run a business, now it is a multinational organization with far-reaching social, economic and environmental impact.

Their circular model to address hygiene and sanitation needs is designed around communities, corporates, NGO partners and volunteers and ensures each one plays a critical role in making the world better, cleaner and safer.

Their process in recycling soap is by working with partner hotels to collect soap and bottled amenities which are then sorted, cleaned and recycled by their incredible MEY workers and generous corporate volunteers.

The volunteering programmes are largely managed by student interns who use this as an opportunity to develop their leadership skills. The finished products are then dispatched to NGO partners for on-ground distribution within impoverished communities across Asia.

For them, soap is a powerful platform to empower the disadvantaged, provide real-life management experience to students, enable volunteers to be part of tangible change and for communities to live a healthier and safer life.
