Pros

  • Has facilities reserved exclusively for Pilates
  • Has lockers, mats, shower rooms, and towels
  • Trainers have a strong expertise in Pilates

Cons

  • All Pilates classes are priced the same regardless of the type
  • Inconsistent operating hours

Many see Pilates as a low-impact type of exercise. But the husband-and-wife team Leo and Trixie Velez, co-founders of Defin8 Fitness, had other plans.

Over the past six years, the pair worked continuously to turn Defin8 Fitness into a multiple award-winning fitness hub.

One of the biggest contributors to this success is their famous Pilates reformer class called Reform8 Pilates. This class intensifies Pilates by incorporating dynamic movements into its Pilates-based routine, making it more energising and upbeat.

However, we appreciate that this is not the only trick Defin8 has up its sleeve. Their already-revamped Pilates gets revamped even further with the aid of technology.

Held in Hong Kong’s first-ever infrared Pilates facility, Infrared Reform8 Pilates uses gentle infrared light to warm up muscles. This science-backed method makes way for more detoxification, mobility, and an overall more effective Pilates session.

But for those who aren’t looking for an intensified version of Pilates, it’s nice to know that they offer basic classes. Beginner level, body sculpting, and mat Pilates are just some of the more traditional versions they teach.

It’s also nice to see that Defin8’s facilities are not lacking. We like how the combination of ambient lighting, floor-to-ceiling windows, and light wood floors made for a calming space.

All these good things aside, we couldn’t help but notice one negative point. All Pilates classes are offered at the same price, regardless if you’re enrolling in the basic version classes or the more advanced ones.

Pros

  • Highly inclusive

  • Offers online classes
  • Widely-varied classes

Cons

  • Employs part-timers or substitute instructors
  • Can be cramped depending on the season

When it opened in 2005, Flex Studio’s goal was to offer fitness expertise to all types of clients. In its seventeen years of delivering on this promise, Flex Studio has become one of the most sought-out Pilates studios in Hong Kong.

True to their word, we are glad to see Flex Studio cater to a wide array of clients. In fact, we think they are one of the most inclusive in terms of clients.

Notably, the studio offers FlexKids and FlexTeens classes where certified instructors teach age-appropriate versions of Aerial Fitness, Barre, and Pilates. These classes target developing healthy habits, mental and physical abilities, and posture at a younger age.

We also like that this studio offers Pre and Post Natal programs. These classes feature modified versions of Pilates and other safe, low-impact exercises to give various benefits to new mothers and mothers-to-be.

Of course, the studio also offers Classical Pilates apart from its specialised programmes. Clients can also check out their Yoga, Yamuna Body Rolling, and Xtend Barre classes to add variety to their fitness routine.

Our favourite thing about Flex Studio is the detailed individual assessment process where clients participate in a Reformer workout. After the initial session, a trainer will identify the level, specific needs, and workout program suited for each person.

All that’s left to decide is whether to join their group classes, enrol in a private one, or bring along two friends for a trio lesson.

The only downside is that large classes may not run as smoothly as smaller sessions. Also, the sessions may be disturbed by latecomers, technical issues, or unprepared substitute teachers.

3. H-Kore (Quarry Bay)

Pros

  • Group classes don’t exceed 12 participants
  • Latecomers can’t join classes
  • Mats and weights are provided
  • Offers snacks and sports apparel
  • Ample parking slots
  • Has showers and locker rooms with hair dryers, organic toiletries, and towels

Cons

  • Not many versions of Pilates are offered
  • Limited Pilates class schedules

Pilates may not be H-Kore’s claim to fame but make no mistake – their classes are still impressive enough to gain a loyal following on their own in Hong Kong.

H-Kore’s Pilates classes are held solely in their Quarry Bay branch. And while H-Kore may have a knack for putting their twist on famous exercises, we appreciate that their version of Pilates is not too far from its roots.

Aptly named KoreFocus, their Pilates class focuses on toning and strengthening your core. This 45-minute class is based on Mat Pilates and will sculpt your muscles while improving alignment, flexibility, and posture.

A fun little detail we like about H-Kore is how they quantify the difficulty levels of their classes. By looking at their website, you would know that KoreFocus has an intensity level of 4 for strength, 3 for flexibility, and 2 for cardio.

And while we find those difficulty metrics useful, we have a much bigger appreciation for H-Kore’s way of grouping their clients.

While their classes apply to all capability levels, H-Kore still makes it a point to have each consist of similar-levelled students. The studio also limits class sizes to twelve people per session to ensure a closely-guided approach.

The only catch is that their Pilates classes only make up a little of their daily schedule to accommodate their more famous 45-min Lagree Fitness workouts.

However, it’s easy to overlook that for all the good things the studio offers instead. Aside from their exhilarating and organised Pilates classes, H-Kore also has remarkable facilities, which include well-maintained Pilates equipment and clean studios.

Pros

  • Small group classes
  • Latecomers are not accepted
  • Offers a one-hour trial session
  • Enforces proper athletic dress code

Cons

  • Doesn’t offer cardio-based or weight-loss-centric Pilates
  • No refunds for missed classes due to tardiness

Established by Dawna Wayburne in 1998, ISO Fit is considered one of the most experienced and knowledgeable Pilates studios in Hong Kong.

Before enrolling in any of their Pilates courses, ISO fit requires a mandatory assessment class for all interested participants. And in our opinion, nothing is as comprehensive as ISO Fit’s evaluation.

The hour-long consultation has four objectives: to assess, explain, introduce the exercise, and set goals.

We appreciate that through this detailed evaluation, their clients gain a personalised programme that best suits their lifestyle and targets their physical issues, strengths, and weaknesses. Moreover, another assessment is done after six months to check on their progress and goals.

Another great thing about ISO Fit is its highly varied classes that can suit and target the needs of their clients.

The studio has the typical Mat and Reformer Pilates, but what we find noteworthy is how ISO Fit offers Pilates classes modified to cater to and focus on specific needs.

For example, the studio offers prenatal, postnatal, rehabilitation, and sports conditioning Pilates. Tailor-made Pilates programmes for golfers, office workers, and runners are also available.

We also appreciate how the trainers share their knowledge with clients during classes. Those who feel inspired to take it further can even enrol in teacher-training classes in the studio.

The only slight disadvantage we can see from this studio is they don’t offer cardio-based Pilates, as ISO Fit is fully committed to the realignment benefits of this exercise.

5. VIM Pilates Studio

Pros

  • The only licensed Stott Pilates studio in Hong Kong
  • Has lockers, parking spots, and showers
  • Offers packages for different budgets

Cons

  • Does not offer cardio-based Pilates

When Eric Wong and Vichael Mak learnt about Pilates, they were so enthused that they felt compelled to open their centre. Ultimately, they ended up studying Stott Pilates abroad and establishing VIM Pilates Studio.

Unlike other versions of Pilates, Stott Pilates includes modern exercising principles. It also focuses on restoring your posture based on your original alignment and not on typical Pilates results.

We appreciate that they offer something unique other than their specialised technique. VIM Pilates Studio is the only studio on this list that holds Pilates classes that use barrels, Cadillac, and stability chairs.

The studio also offers Pilates-based fitness training, which not all fitness studios provide. A unique aspect of these classes is the use of TRX and Redcore machines to improve physical conditioning.

Nevertheless, they still have some similarities with classical Pilates, as VIM Pilates Studio still offers classes that use mats and reformer machines.

As for the instructors, we were glad to learn from our surveys that they are professional and thorough in all the classes they teach. Furthermore, apart from being accredited Stott Pilates trainers, they are also certified to teach aerial fitness, yoga, and other types of Pilates.

We also found it impressive that VIM Pilates is the only licensed studio in Hong Kong to teach Stott Pilates to both clients and aspiring trainers

However, just like ISO Fit, VIM Pilates Studio doesn’t focus on cardio-based Pilates. If you’re looking for Pilates with weight loss as your main goal, we suggest looking at other Pilates studios in Hong Kong.

Barre Formula is another studio that caught our eye due to their unique approach to health and wellness.

Unlike other studios, Barre Formula acknowledges that every student is unique in their schedules and lifestyles, which is why the instructors collaborate with attendees in customizing their session dates.

Another thing we like is their unique blend to physical wellness. Here, you can improve on your strength, cardio, and mindfulness.

Plus, the rates for sessions depend on how many you can attend. There’s an option for unlimited visits, but you can also opt for as little as a single session, with their Drop-In rates.

Lastly, there are sessions catered to different activities. You will find classes for full-body workouts, core strengthening, lower-body workout, and more.

Cons

  • May be expensive for some

Central Wellness is a multidisciplinary clinic with two locations in Central and Stanley. They offer a range of services including Osteopathy, Physiotherapy, Nutrition, Psychology, and other Allied Health disciplines.

What’s great about them is that they take an integrative and functional medicine approach to address patients’ health concerns. They look beyond symptoms and medical history, considering physiological and psychological imbalances, lifestyle factors, and environmental influences.

Unlike others, they emphasize a collaborative approach to healthcare. The practitioners at the clinic share a common philosophy and work synergistically using a Functional Medicine model.

We also love tat Central Wellness has two convenient locations in Central and Stanley, making it easily accessible for individuals in Hong Kong. The clinic spaces are designed with patients’ well-being in mind.

Additionally, for those unable to visit the clinic in person, telehealth appointments are available, providing flexibility and accessibility to patients.

One of the notable services offered by Central Wellness is their pilates program, which follows the method developed by Joseph Hubertus Pilates. The focus is on achieving a balance between power and flexibility while incorporating correct breathing patterns.

As a premium clinic with highly skilled practitioners, the services at Central Wellness may come at a higher cost compared to other options. Individuals on a tight budget might find the pricing less affordable.
