Pros
- 5 minutes away from station
- Offers free consultations
Cons
- Closed on Sundays
Blackout Tattoo is a tattoo shop founded on the idea that tattoos should be as unique as the individual getting them.
As such, customers can consult very closely with Blackout’s artists and give them a general idea of the tattoo’s design, size, and placement. After some time, the artists will present the drawings in person and tweak the designs depending on your preference.
Sounds pretty normal, you say? Well, what we like about these consultations is that the artists do them for free.
Blackout also has three resident tattoo artists. Although there are only three of them, they can accomplish quite a range of artistic designs, from realistic tigers and flowers to more stylistic pop culture characters.
One of the things we like about the artists is that they made us feel comfortable and happy throughout the entire process.
We also appreciate how they keep the shop clean and hygienic, which the artists humorously say is because of their germaphobia.
Another of Blackout Tattoo’s biggest strengths is its accessibility. You can find the tattoo shop 5 minutes from the Sheung Wan MTR Station.
Combined with its long opening hours, Blackout Tattoo offers some of the most convenient and accessible tattoo services in the area.
Despite its long operating hours, the tattoo shop does not accept walk-ins due to the pandemic.
Overall, we believe that Blackout Tattoo is the perfect match for those looking to get high-quality yet affordable body art as comfortably as possible.

Pros
- Uses vegan inks
- Open daily
- Offers affordable aftercare products
Cons
- Inconsistent operating hours
The Dragons Lair is a tattoo shop in Hong Kong with a pretty rare offering.
Before we get to that, though, let’s talk about its biggest strength: its experienced tattoo artists, Jonny D and Evita.
Jonny D was an apprentice of Jimmy Ho, one of the most well-known tattoo artists in Hong Kong. His works focus mainly on tattoos that make a statement, popping up through the use of bold lines.
Meanwhile, Evita is a tattoo artist who enjoys traditional Japanese styles and colourful cartoon art.
Although they are the only two artists running the shop, they can provide a wide range of tattoos ranging from solid black full-back body art to small but cute characters.
On our visit, we found the artists kind and friendly, but efficient and experienced. They gave us helpful design advice and even offered us aftercare tips and affordable items.
Aside from their personality and skill, here’s the thing that really caught our attention here: their vegan ink and aftercare products. By using these, the artists make the shop accessible to more people without making them feel judged.
Overall, Dragons Lair Tattoo’s skilled tattoo artists, daily long operating hours, and unique products make them a perfect place to go to for larger-than-life tattoos, especially for vegans.

Pros
- Affordable deposit
- Multiple tattoo artists with different styles
Cons
- Long wait list
Star Crossed Tattoo is a tattoo parlour in Hong Kong that we believe is best for those looking for a wide variety of art styles.
What we like best about Star Crossed Tattoo is that they have six resident tattoo artists, each with their own unique art style and expertise.
With such a diversity of skills, you can get virtually any design you want to fit your personality. Star Crossed Tattoo’s roster knows how to do realistic and stylized animals, old-school American and Hong Kong art, and even smooth, lifelike renders of faces and people.
On our visit, we found the artists professional yet pleasant. We appreciated how they kept the tattoo shop clean and comfortable, making the wait worth it.
Another thing we like is that the shop offers different inks based on your needs. Although they use regular tattoo ink, they can use hypoallergenic and vegan ink options if the customer requests them.
The only disadvantage that Star Crossed Tattoo has is that it has a long waitlist. They recommend that you book an appointment with them four weeks in advance since they often find themselves fully booked despite their long operating hours.

Pros
- Multiple artists with different styles
- Open daily
Cons
- Appointments only
- Charges depend on the artist
Friday’s is a tattoo shop in Hong Kong with a chill and comfortable atmosphere. We enjoyed the ambience within the shop, which was riddled with neon lights and pop culture references.
The ambience was made better by the artists, who were as skilled as they were amicable.
One of Friday’s biggest strengths is its roster of five artists who spent years in the field of art. All of them came from different backgrounds and industries before banding together, which we believe gives them an advantage when it comes to diversity.
Since they have different experiences, the artists have personal styles ranging from expertise in pure black and line art tattoos to realistic and bright body art.
We enjoyed their subtle use of colours, making them pop out of the skin.
We believe it is important to note that each artist charges differently, so it might be best to check their works beforehand and pick one with the quality and style you like before committing.
It seems that locals are not the only ones who like Friday’s tattoo artists and their style. We talked to one of their previous clients, and they said they came from halfway across the globe just to get their first tattoo here.
With that in mind, we believe Friday’s is a perfect match for those looking for renowned artists and more life-like tattoos. However, the tattoo shop does not accept walk-ins due to the number of customers they have, so it is best to make an appointment immediately.

Pros
- 10 different tattoo artists
- Over 2 decades in the business
- Head tattoo artist has worked with celebrities
Cons
- By appointment only
Freedom Tattoo is a tattoo shop in Hong Kong that started all the way back in the year 2000. With over two decades of experience, we believe that Freedom Tattoo has enough feats that earn them a spot on our list.
What we like best about Freedom Tattoo are its artists. Freedom has 10 different tattoo artists, each with their specialities and skills that allow them to create unique and custom art with every customer.
You can get a tattoo of a person or a character that represents your personality, depending on who you wish to work on your skin. Freedom also brings in guest artists from all over the world now and then, which is definitely a plus.
However, the most noteworthy of the skilled tattoo artists in Freedom is its founder, Gabe. Gabe has decades of experience in his field and had the privilege to work with brands and athletes such as Nike, Vans, and Lebron James.
On our visit, we saw and appreciated the ambience and aesthetic of their spacious, clean, and well-decorated shop. We also liked how professional and patient with our questions the artists were during our appointment.
Due to the pandemic, Freedom Tattoo only accepts customers through bookings. Despite this limit, Freedom’s skilled tattoo artists and commitment to cleanliness make them a tattoo shop worth considering.
