Pros
- Dual-language education
- Well-maintained facilities
- Impressive educators
Cons
- Admission can be difficult because of their small class sizes
Guidepost Montessori International in Kennedy Town is part of an international network of Montessori schools that offer a nurturing and educational environment for toddlers and young children ages 2 to 6 years old.
The Montessori school offers education in both English and Mandarin for all of its programs, and while it’s typical for schools in Hong Kong to do this, we still found it to be notable.
That’s because Guidepost’s approach is said to be such that it strongly facilitates early bilingualism. At least, that’s what the parents we talked to said.
As a Montessori school, we were pleased to see that their facilities were well-kept and maintained in the best possible shape.
Their “Children’s House” program emphasises joyful learning for kids, which is great for a nurturing environment, especially in the preschool stage.
Their teachers were also very professional and handled kids very well, always making sure that everyone is taken care of.
In addition to the school’s remarkable features, we appreciate that Montessori methods are founded in individually directed learning, real-world experiences, and responsibility for themselves and their surroundings.
The school is focused on providing an environment of support through a scientifically designed curriculum that allows children to foster their own ideas and interests, express their feelings, and make choices.
We think that this is a great preschool where kids can learn to become independent and even develop love for learning and exploration.

Pros
- Stunning facilities
- Warm and welcoming teachers
- Nurturing environment
Cons
- Minor complaints regarding accessibility for differently abled children
Wilderness International Kindergarten in Kennedy Town is a preschool that focuses mainly on outdoor play, such as sensory plays and an approach to structured learning, discovery activities, and enriching programs in the school’s own nature garden.
After looking at their method, we found that Wilderness takes a Reggio Emilia-inspired approach in preschool education. Through this, Wilderness is able to promote a holistic approach to learning.
In turn, this helps children focus on their social-emotional development, self-regulation, problem solving, and cognitive skills.
It’s one of the few schools in Hong Kong that uses this approach, and we believe that it’s a great way for kids to learn interpersonal skills before starting formal education.
Of course, we also looked at their staff’s qualifications. The teachers of Wilderness are all internationally recruited, world-class early childhood educators, so parents are ensured that their kids are in good hands.
In addition to their highly qualified educators, the school’s stunning facilities are also one of the things that make them a renowned preschool in Hong Kong.
We especially like how Wilderness is strongly rooted in the belief that connecting with nature could help with sensory and motor development while contributing to a child’s well-being.
For a preschool, we find that Wilderness is one that teaches kids to maintain their natural curiosity and eagerness to discover and learn.

Pros
- Dual-language international kindergarten
- Inquiry-based learning underpinned by the UK’s EYFS learning framework
- 2 experienced classroom teachers (1 native English and 1 native Mandarin teacher) per class
- Small class size
Cons
- Parking can be difficult around the school’s location
Another prominent preschool in Hong Kong is Mulberry House International Kindergarten, with two bespoke campuses located in Pak Shek Kok, Tai Po and Southside, Hong Kong Island.
The school takes in children from 6 months to 3 years old in preschool preparatory classes, or children above 3 years old in kindergarten courses.
Kids in both levels get to take courses in English and Mandarin Chinese language and culture through early bilingual learning experience.
Unlike the previous schools mentioned above, Mulberry takes on a mixed approach to education. The school combines both the Emilia education approach with the British Early Learning System (EYFS).
This is to develop an all-around early childhood education strategy that’s mainly based on inquiry-based learning.
With regards to mulberry’s language instructions, we give them a 10/10, since they provide total immersion with English and Mandarin inside the classroom the entire time.
This allows children to learn common and academic vocabulary for both languages, building a strong literacy foundation for English and Mandarin.
On the other hand, their overall learning approach allows teachers to prepare personalised learning opportunities. They also provide two teachers in each class, allowing each other to co-lead and teach.
Finally, with a small class size, we find that this allows for a more personalised attention, giving teachers more room to focus on every student.

Pros
- Multiple campus sites to choose from
- Parents can choose between an English or Bilingual stream
- Highly qualified teachers
Cons
- Class sizes tend to be larger
ESF International has five kindergarten schools in Hong Kong: ESF Abacus, Hillside, Tsing Yi, Wu Kai Sha, and Tung Chung.
All schools are IB World Schools, meaning they’re all recognised by the International baccalaureate Organisation to offer primary programs.
With that, it’s mostly an inquiry-based, transdisciplinary curriculum framework that builds on children’s conceptual understanding.
We find that in comparison to the previous schools, this approach mainly centres on early literacy and numeracy.
While Mandarin Chinese remains to be a specialist language and is somehow still integrated into their programs, at ESF Abacus and Tung Chung, parents can choose between an English stream and a bilingual English and Mandarin Chinese Stream.
Other than that, ESF’s learning environment is still rich and engaging. Children are well-resourced and are provided with age-appropriate equipment and materials.
The school provides modern teaching and learning technology, and educators are also highly qualified, coming from internationally renowned institutions.
Location-wise, it’s great for parents and guardians because they have multiple options to choose from and find a campus that’s best for their commute and route.
High quality, challenging, international education is what’s at the core of ESF, and we think it’s what makes them one of Hong Kong’s top choices for preschool education.

Pros
- Easily accessible campuses
- Provides bus transportation for students
- Rich educational history
Cons
- Minor complaints about admissions staff
With its heritage in the UK, Malvern College Preschool Hong Kong is an extension of the institution’s endeavour in providing a solid foundation for learning and success for children.
Right off the bat, we can see that their early years educational program is designed to nurture the potential children through a range of stimulating and developmental learning exercises. And impressively, this doesn’t fall short from the school’s 150-year running history.
For their preschool program, the school envisions developing children’s individual strengths through a personalised approach of active, play-based learning.
It’s also worth noting that Malvern College Hong Kong is a pioneering Forest-Beach School, which means its programs are based on child-led learning, with a focus on all five senses.
From what we found, this allows children to develop intra- and interpersonal skills through games and supervised group activities like hide-and-seek and scavenger hunts.
Consequently, this gives children the chance to learn in the outdoors and open spaces. While we don’t really see much of a difference in the other schools’ approach, we still find this to be a notable take in education.
With regards to location, all Malvern College Preschool campuses are easily accessible via private and public transport, with parking available at Coronation Circle.
The school also provides bus transportation from campus to every Forest-Beach School learning site.
