Top 5 Private Banking in Hong Kong

Services. Banks offer a wide range of products and services, but its relevance should hold some importance to you.

Fee structure. A quality bank always provides a detailed explanation about their fee structure, even though it’s in the fine print. Transparency is key.

Online services. Visiting the bank is daunting for little tasks. A good bank should have technical aid, whether it's through their application and other online services.

Security. The most critical factor when choosing the right bank is security. We only included banks that have fraud prevention techniques and deposit insurance.

Bank of China (Hong Kong) is a one-stop bank that offers wealth management solutions if you’re looking for a balance between personal and corporate banking services to meet your needs, both personal and business-related.

One of the things we really liked about banking with Bank of China was the wide range of services that they offer for clients.

We looked at their online application, especially since we make most transactions online nowadays, so we’re extra particular about this one.

Sometimes the app can glitch, but it happens seldom, generally if there are many users at the same time.

As for its interface, it’s pretty user-friendly and easy to navigate. With that said, their online services get a perfect score for us.

Proceeding now to face-to-face transactions, their services were also quite commendable. Their bank tellers are very accommodating and quick to work.

Their branch security guards are also very welcoming without being too lenient, so you still feel safe doing transactions.

Overall, we’re fond of Bank of China, and it’s no surprise to see how they’ve garnered a number of awards over the years for the quality of service they provide their clients.

For those that are looking for an easy bank to work with, we definitely recommend checking out Bank of China, specifically the branch at Garden Road in Central.

  • Best NextGen Private Bank – Highly commended, Asia

Cons

  • More suited for corporate and business transactions than personal banking

Over the years since 1958, BNP Paribas has created a distinctive setup to provide a variety of services to corporate clients, private and institutional investors, and financial intermediaries.

On their website you’ll find that they’re fond of headlining as a “Responsible Bank”, and after a while of doing transactions with them, we’re glad to say that they don’t fall short in this aspect.

Being a leading European bank, BNP Paribas caters to corporations and other institutional bodies as well as private investors.

So if you’re looking for a bank to handle your side of the business, BNP Paribas is one of the banks we highly recommend.

From both online and actual customer service, this bank gets a favourable scoring from us. We were accommodated thoroughly well on every occasion we needed to get something done on our account.

In addition, we’ve seen their recent call for a sustainable transition to “green finance”, in hopes of putting Hong Kong in a position to lead in transitioning to net zero carbon.

The company is also big on sustainability and carrying out activities for their environmental advocacies, and nowadays, that’s something we shouldn’t ignore.

Seeing that BNP Paribas is serious about their call for a greener Hong Kong without compromising the quality of their services, we’re now more eager to continue banking with them.

Pros

  • Friendly and transparent financial advisers
  • Asian Banking and Finance Retail Banking Awards
  • Bloomberg Businessweek Chinese Edition Financial Institution Awards

Cons

  • The regional head office can have a longer queue

Another bank that we specifically like for personal banking is the Bank of East Asia, especially with around 15 branches around Hong Kong.

One of their products that we like the most includes their personal insurance and investment policies.

Even with basic savings accounts, we saw that they have a relatively higher interest rate compared to other banks.

So if you’re planning on saving money, investing some of it, or just wanting to get insurance for safety, this bank has really laid it out.

Another thing we’re particularly fond of when it comes to the Bank of East Asia is the attitude of their financial advisers, as well as their other bank employees.

While some financial advisers can be too pushy about selling their products, the ones we’ve interacted with at the Bank of East Asia were genuinely interested in helping us.

Of course their end goal was to sell, but it didn’t come off as forceful as it often does from others, which we like. They were also very transparent and honest about their products.

In the end, we’ve learned a lot more about managing our finances, and we know we can count on the Bank of East Asia as one of the banks that will safeguard our money.

Pros

  • Forgiving plans for personal loans
  • Great for personal banking
  • Awarded the Caring Company Logo by the Hong Kong Council of Social Service for the 19th consecutive year
  • Anti-Deception Coordination Centre of the Hong Kong Police Force’s recognition for “Extensive Display of Anti-scam Publicity Materials”

Cons

  • Queues can take a while

Another bank that we find to be highly commendable for personal banking is China CITIC Bank (CNBCI).

When it comes to either self-service banking or dealing with their professional staff at any of their branches, we find them to be really efficient.

Their online services are also easier to use, and their website doesn’t crash as often (which appears to be very common for banking websites), so that’s definitely a plus for us.

Aside from their e-banking services, their personal banking is one of our favourites out of the other banks in Hong Kong.

They offer a competitive interest deposit account, with attractive exchange rates, and even convenient remittance service, too.

So far, doing transactions with CNBCI hasn’t been so much of a hassle for us, and the efficiency is something we really like.

And if you find yourself needing to take out a loan, their personal loans are quite easy to sign up for, and approval only takes a short amount of time.

One of their specialists looked into our financial situation and came up with a flexible loan plan. Whether that’s the norm for loan applications or it’s just one of their own methods, it’s a really helpful way so we don’t feel rushed about payments.

Pros

  • World’s Best Bank by Euromoney
  • Global Bank of the Year by The Banker
  • Best Bank in the World by Global Finance

Cons

  • For those opening an account for the first time, you might be required more documents than others banks would

Finally, DBS Private Bank is a wonderful place to start if you’re searching for private banking services in Hong Kong to help you safeguard the future of your family.

It’s one of the largest banks in Hong Kong, and one of the leading banks in Asia with over 12 million clients.

Making transactions with DBS Private Bank is always a breeze, thanks to their team of knowledgeable bankers.

Their team is particularly keen on wealth growth and protecting family money, so we felt well assured of their services.

DBS has received accolades such as “World’s Best Bank” by Euromoney as well as “Best Bank in the World” by Global finance – awards that are indeed very remarkable for a bank.

Aside from personal banking, they also introduce clients to more trading and investing options, giving them the option to trade across seven stock markets.

Their online services are also quite exceptional. From digital tax payment promotions to personal loans and digital tokens, we’re glad to have come across these, providing us more comfort and convenience.

One snag we’ve hit with them is getting help online from an agent. As much as we like their overall online and face-to-face services, this is one they can definitely improve on.
